Distinguished and Famous people from ACT

The Australian Capital Territory has attracted people through public institutions, scientific research and the landscape itself. Its notable associations extend beyond parliamentary office to the design of Canberra and creative work made from the materials of its surroundings.

๐Ÿ“ Marion Mahony Griffin and Walter Burley Griffin

Marion Mahony Griffin and Walter Burley Griffin collaborated on the winning design for Canberra in 1912. Although the entry bore Walter's name, Marion's contribution included the striking drawings that presented their vision. Walter later became Federal Capital Director of Design and Construction, working through disputes, funding shortages and the interruption of war before leaving the project in 1920. Their connection remains legible in the city's geometry, even though the plan's implementation was far from straightforward.

๐ŸŽจ Rosalie Gascoigne

Rosalie Gascoigne moved from New Zealand to Australia in 1943 to marry astronomer Ben Gascoigne. Living at Mount Stromlo, she absorbed the light, colours and textures of the Canberra region. She later made assemblages from salvaged materials including road signs, drink crates, rusted metal and weathered timber. Her first exhibition came in 1974, followed within four years by a National Gallery of Victoria survey. Materials discarded by others became the basis of a major artistic career.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Frank Fenner

Frank Fenner became a foundation professor at the Australian National University's John Curtin School of Medical Research and later directed the school. His work on viruses contributed to his role chairing the international commission that certified the eradication of smallpox. In 1980 he presented its conclusion to the World Health Assembly. He also established ANU's Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies, bringing environmental questions into a Canberra career already distinguished by laboratory research and international public service.
